Glasgow. The word burned out of the screen at me. Cassie had been on the train to Glasgow yesterday morning. She hadn’t been seen since.

I looked at the time on my phone.

It was already 9.10 a.m.

“Dad!” I screamed.

At least the second time I did the right thing. I told Dad what I’d done and he phoned the police station again. He told them about the meeting of the people investigating the sound, and they said they’d be in touch with their colleagues in Glasgow, and … that was that.

“Look, Fitz,” said Dad. “You’ve done all you can do, and you did well. If Cassie was going to meet those people, then she must have emailed them. They have her phone, so they can look these things up. They’ll find her. But you have to understand, the police aren’t going to phone us every five minutes to keep us up to speed.”

I knew he was right. But it didn’t feel right doing anything else but thinking about Cassie, worrying about her.

“Why don’t you go out for a walk?” Dad said. “See the boys in the band?”

“No,” I said, a bit too abruptly, and Dad noticed.

“Something up?”

“No, nothing. Nothing serious. Anyway, I might go for a walk.”

“Good idea. If I hear anything, I’ll call you right away. Got it?”

“Thanks, Dad,” I said, and I grabbed a coat and headed out of the kitchen door towards the park.
